SEO Glossary Definition

Orphan Page

An orphan page is a publicly accessible URL on a website that has no incoming internal hyperlink from any other page on that same site.

Why orphan pages disrupt crawler paths

Search bots (like Googlebot) crawl websites by moving from one page to another through links. If a page has zero incoming internal links, a crawler auditing your site's navigation architecture will never find it. While it can still be indexed via an XML sitemap or backlink, search engines view it as low-priority due to its isolation, leading to weak rankings and poor crawl freshing.

Methods to discover orphan URLs

  • Sitemap Cross-Referencing: Comparing sitemap URLs against crawled internal link lists to spot pages present in the sitemap but unreachable via links.
  • Analytics Data Audits: Checking for pages receiving live traffic but lacking incoming link directories.
