What is Index Bloat?

Index Bloat occurs when a search engine indexes a large number of low-value, redundant, or thin pages on a website.

This "bloat" dilutes your site's overall authority and wastes crawl budget, as Googlebot spends time visiting unimportant pages instead of your high-converting content.

Common Causes of Index Bloat

  • Faceted Navigation: Thousands of filter combinations indexed as separate URLs.
  • Tag/Category Bloat: Hundreds of archive pages with only one or two posts.
  • Search Result Pages: Accidentally allowing internal search results to be crawled and indexed.
  • HTTPS/HTTP Duplication: Both versions of the site indexed simultaneously.
