A retail store with 150,000 SKUs had undergone multiple platform migrations, leaving behind thousands of unmanaged 301 redirects. Many redirects formed complex 'redirect chains' (e.g., URL A -> B -> C -> D). Googlebot spent its entire crawl budget navigating these loops, leaving 45% of new product collections completely uncrawled and unindexed for months.
Our Redirect Chain Checker scanned the site and mapped the path of every redirect. We discovered chains up to 5 steps deep, alongside duplicate URL structures generated by Shopify’s default tag filtering system, which did not point to self-referencing canonical tags.
We flattened all redirect chains, converting multi-step loops into single-hop redirects (URL A -> D). We also modified the Shopify liquid layout templates to canonicalize all tag-filtered collection pages back to their main parents. Crawl efficiency improved immediately, and Googlebot indexed all new collections within 8 days.
